Richard Aspinwall

On September 4, 2024, Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, suffered a profound loss. During a tragic shooting, two beloved math teachers—Richard “Ricky” Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie—were killed while protecting their students. Richard was more than a math teacher—he was “Coach A,” a devoted assistant football coach whose booming voice and generous spirit shaped young lives both in and out of the classroom. A devoted husband to Shayna Jacobson Aspinwall and proud girl dad to Addison and Emery, Ricky’s life was defined by family and service. He was remembered as “the behind the scenes guy who wasn’t looking for any thanks,” and yet his impact was immeasurable.

As the gunman entered Apalachee High, both Ricky and Cristina acted with instinctual courage—barricading doors, guiding students to safety, and standing between life and death. When the gunfire erupted, they did not hesitate to protect their students at any cost. Their final acts were acts of unwavering selflessness. Their sacrifice reminds us that educators are the guardians of possibility and hope. Ricky Aspinwall: teacher, coach, husband, father— a quiet yet powerful pillar who stood tall so others could stand.  May their legacy challenge us to teach, to protect, and to love without reservation—just as Ricky did, until the very end.
