Class of 1992 Inductee Leaves Generous Gift to the National Teachers Hall of Fame

Emporia, KS – An estate gift from one of the first inductees to the National Teachers Hall of Fame will support the organization’s mission “to recognize and honor exceptional career teachers, encourage excellence in teaching, and preserve the rich heritage of the teaching profession in the United States.”

Anna Alfiero of Norwich, Connecticut, was inducted into the NTHF in the Class of 1992. She died Aug.19, 2023. The NTHF recently received her final gift of more than $500,000.

Carol Strickland, retired NTHF executive director, knew Alfiero for decades after her induction and recalled Alfiero saying she planned to remember the Hall of Fame in her estate plan. “She said her induction was the most meaningful thing in her long career,” Strickland remembered.

Alfiero taught science and math at Clark Lane Middle School in Norwich for 35 years. In 1992, the same year she was inducted into the NTHF, she became a guidance counselor at Clark Lane. She retired in 1997.

“We share Anna’s strong love for the Hall of Fame and are truly grateful for her foresightedness to support the Hall so generously,” said Craig Martin, chair of the NTHF Board of Trustees.

The NTHF board is incorporating the gift into the Hall’s long-term strategic plan. Alfiero’s legacy will be remembered during the 2025 induction ceremonies on June 20, 2025, in Emporia, Kansas.

About the National Teachers Hall of Fame

The National Teachers Hall of Fame (NTHF), located in Emporia, Kansas, was founded in 1989 as a tribute to our nation’s most important profession: Teaching. The first class of five educators was inducted in 1992.

The NTHF is committed to drawing the public’s attention to exceptional career teachers through a recognition program which annually honors five of the nation’s most outstanding PreK-12 educators with at least 20 years of teaching experience by inducting them as Members of the National Teachers Hall of Fame.

The NTHF includes an exhibit to honor inductees, a museum celebrating the history of education, a National Memorial to Fallen Educators, and a “Wall of Fame” for honoring educators who have made a difference in the lives of others.
